Ceramics I worked on individualizing and grading bowls this week. They got creative, changing rim shapes, experimenting with sculptural additions and feet, underglazing and carving surfaces and practicing rolling coils. Students also took their first quiz this week on states of clay and tools; results are posted on powerschool.
Jewelry I students turned in their scrollwork earrings and started rings. They learned about the 'space' and 'feel' tests to ensure that their ring joints are touching in a strong butt joint. They used solder to bond the rings together, and a ring mandrel and a wax mallet to shape the rings into a perfect circle. They also took their first quiz this week on metal properties and tools; results are posted on powerschool (and to be posted shortly for H period).
Jewelry II students finished up chains this week, and voted on their choice of Textured Bezel Pendant or 2D>3D for the next project. The vote was unanimously for 2D>3D! Students collaborated to solve challenges encountered on the chains project and to develop clasps. Jewelry II students were also invited to an elective New York Field Trip (bus, MET, dinner, Broadway Show) in December; cost is $175, first payment due 10/14, first come first serve.
