Jewelry I
Jewelry I students worked on removing excess solder from their joints until only a hair line of solder remained between the nickel silver wire. Students then started using the bench buffer to buff the ring's exterior, and the flex shaft to buff the rings interior. Students are feeling more confident with the torches and equipment, and will soon be able to use the equipment independently, after they pass the safety quiz, which will be administered late this week. Students will also be completing an in class mini-quiz on the elements of art. Ceramics I
Ceramics I students closed their drums this week, and began the shaping process. Getting the pot to match the picture posed a challenge for many students, but combinations of v-cuts, paddling and adjusting coil diameter, in tandem with the proportional measurements we figured out, helped to ensure that students' drum bellies matched their pictures. We began large and medium shaping on the forms at the end of last week, using paddles and sureforms to make the bellies accurate to design, to remove shadows from the forms, and to tighten the skin of the forms. We also completed a mini-quiz on the elements of art. Ceramics II
Ceramics II students finished cups this week, and began taking taking their quiz on wheel throwing. Here are some samples of finished student work from class. Students' 10 Cups will now be fired and graded, and the class will brainstorm and vote on a larger cylinders project. Possibilities for this can be vases, pitchers, or sculptural forms. We will share ideas today that we brainstormed over the weekend, talk about the key skills that need to be developed in the project (centering and throwing 3-10 lbs of clay, pulling for height, and breaking height thresholds of 4", 6", 8" +, and combining wheel thrown parts) and decide what the group would like to work on together. After mastering basic throwing skills, students are taking a practical on basic skills. You can view the assessment here.
