This is one of my favorite times of year! While all classes do have a written exam (see moodle for final written exam review guides), level I students also complete a practical portion. The practical is a project in which students are given some basic parameters to demonstrate their mastery of content, but also have broad freedom to create a project that they may have been thinking about all semester. Practicals were introduced last week, and students are well into the brainstorming and construction phases at this point. I am so excited to see their ideas, and how students problem solve these projects into fruition. They really are incredible!
Ceramics II students spend their last weeks finishing up their major projects from the year, which have all had pretty wide parameters of creativity. I can't believe the skills these students have gained in such a short period of time. To put their work in context, we have less than 80 hours of work time in the semester. In this time, students have come from barely knowing how to use a pottery wheel to making 8"+ cylinders and bowls up to 12" in diameter. Compare that to the 10,000 hours to mastery, and you can see how far they've come in such a short time!

Here are the Final Practical packets for Jewelry I, Ceramics I, and the Final Portfolio for Ceramics II. We spend 2-3 weeks working on these prior to the exam, and students are expected to bring their packet/portfolio and product (for level 1's) to the exam. These are worth 10% of the student's total grade in the course. Students have met with me several times over the course of the semester in 1:1 meetings to review their term grade, ask questions, and discuss opportunities for make-up/late work. Grades are mostly up to date, though I encourage students to turn in incomplete (shown by a project grade of 40%) or missing assignments (show by a 0%) before the end of the term, which is June 7th. The exam schedule is:
June 8: (Wed): Exams - Periods A & B
June 9: (Thurs): Exams - Periods C & D
June 10: (Fri): Exams - Periods E & F
June 13: (Mon): Exams - Period G
June 14: (Tues): Exams - Period H (Last Day of School)
All art students need to attend their normally scheduled final exam block unless s/he is a Senior with a 90% or higher term grade on June 7 (all assignments collected and graded), and no unexcused absences, which qualifies the student for senior exam exemption.
